Aberlleiniog Castle is a little-known Scheduled Ancient Monument, situated near Penmon, on the Isle of Anglesey, in North Wales. It nestles at the heart of peaceful woodland Nature Reserve, close to the shores of the beautiful Menai Strait, within the Anglesey Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
The castle is owned by Menter Môn and is managed by a steering group of local representatives. The aims of the project are to protect its historical and cultural interest, promote nature conservation and improve public access.
On securing ownership Menter Môn undertook a number of actions to improve this unique site. These included creating 2 kilometres of footpaths and walkways, planting thousands of native trees including oak, restored the castle and provided on site interpretation.
Aberlleiniog Castle's natural surroundings and unique history set it apart from any other ancient monument. Its captivating story abounds with colourful characters, including Welsh Princes, Norman overlords, Viking raiders, Civil War commanders and Georgian naturalists. With support from Menter Môn local people and visitors are now able to learn about and visit this previously hidden corner of Anglesey.
