In collaboration with Menter M\u00f4n\u2019s agri-tech programme, Tech Tyfu, the installation of the innovative growing system has provided pupils with new learning experiences, teaching them new ways of growing crops without using soil.<\/p>\n<p>The unit was\u00a0supplied\u00a0to the school\u00a0by Tech\u00a0Tyfu\u00a0with funds from the AONB Sustainable Development Fund, through Isle of Anglesey Council.\u00a0Tech\u00a0Tyfu\u00a0staff ran a series of sessions with this group of Year 11 students\u00a0who\u00a0cared for the crops.\u00a0The students developed a mixed salad bag product at the end of the sessions with peas hoots and microgreens, which was presented to staff and parents.\u00a0The scheme allows young people to develop important workplace skills &#8211; from entrepreneurship to problem solving and teamwork.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Nia Wyn Roberts is Assistant Headteacher at Ysgol Uwchradd Caergybi: \u201cAs a school, we\u2019re really lucky to have received this vertical farm unit through the Tech Tyfu scheme. The idea of having a \u2018farm\u2019 in an urban school was really interesting, and we learnt about the importance of growing vegetables in a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe look forward to\u00a0making full use of the unit across all learning ages\u00a0and there will be opportunities for pupils to use the products\u00a0in their catering lessons\u00a0and learn more about the scientific\u00a0aspects\u00a0of the unit.\u00a0We\u2019re really grateful to the team at\u00a0Menter\u00a0M\u00f4n\u00a0for giving our young people this learning opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr Luke Tyler,\u00a0Agri-Tech Manager at Menter M\u00f4n\u00a0added:\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0been\u00a0a\u00a0fantastic\u00a0experience\u00a0working<\/p>\n<p>with\u00a0the\u00a0school\u00a0delivering\u00a0these\u00a0sessions\u00a0and\u00a0seeing\u00a0the\u00a0reponse\u00a0of the\u00a0students\u00a0to\u00a0this\u00a0technology. The students engaged with the project more than we could have expected, proposing their own crops and developing their own product at the end of the sessions. We even had one boy overcome a lifetime dislike of spring onions and enjoy tasting a crop of microleeks!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased on the success of this initial work, we have secured further funding to continue this work in two more Ynys Mon schools, and will now be working on developing the vertical farming as part of the curriculum, with the longer intention of expanding the project across north Wales.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs part of the project, we have produced teaching materials for key stage 2 children to reflect the new curriculum in Wales.\u00a0The teaching resource include activities and a pack to support teachers. These are currently\u00a0available free of charge from the Tech Tyfu website.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Tech\u00a0Tyfu\u00a0project itself was launched as a pilot scheme in March 2020, to\u00a0support\u00a0farmers and growers in northwest Wales to\u00a0develop\u00a0innovative ways of producing crops.
