A new generation of Welsh-speaking marine specialists is being supported to build careers close to home, as two north Wales graduates secure internships with Menter M\u00f4n\u2019s flagship tidal energy scheme, Morlais. Amy Quaeck-Evans from Porthmadog and Si\u00f4n D\u2019Arcy from Bangor, have joined the team recently through the Marine Futures Internship programme.<\/strong> Funded by The Crown Estate, the aim is to give aspiring marine professionals the opportunity to gain practical experience and develop the skills they need for careers in the sector.<\/p>\n

For Menter M\u00f4n, that local focus is central to its vision for Morlais \u2013 not only creating quality jobs in a growing green industry, but ensuring those opportunities are available through the medium of Welsh.<\/p>\n

Getting to know Si\u00f4n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Why did you apply for the internship?<\/strong><\/p>\n

“I’ve just finished my Masters in Conservation and Land Management at Bangor University, and before that I was in Cardiff studying Biological Sciences. Since I was a child, I have been interested in the sea, nature and the environment, so I wanted to have more practical experience in the field. Because I studied the land at university, the opportunity to learn more about the sea was very appealing to me, especially as it was an opportunity for me to work close to home.”<\/p>\n

What is a typical day for an intern here?<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Every day is different, \u200b\u200bwhich is great! The work has taken me to various places, including Cardiff and Scarborough, and I would go to London too! One of the main projects I’m working on is to create a survey to get the opinions of local people in Anglesey and Pen Ll\u0177n about marine energy developments. It is an opportunity to understand what people really think, what is important to them and what questions they have about the field in general, I find this extremely interesting! Work also includes external work, such as going to Llanddona beach, joining a walking group to see what was around and learning more about how fieldwork is done.”<\/p>\n

Is there someone in the nature sector who inspires you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

“David Attenborough. I’ve watched many of his programs over the years, and the way he raises awareness about nature is something that inspires me. But also, since I started, everyone who works here inspires me. Everyone is so professional, ready to help and doing a special job for the natural world around us.”<\/p>\n

How important is it to you to have a role where you practice your Welsh?<\/strong><\/p>\n

“It’s really important and absolutely fantastic! There are few opportunities in the field that are through the medium of Welsh – even in Cardiff, many of the opportunities and lectures were in English. Having the opportunity to use Welsh every day, in a professional and academic context, is something very special.”<\/p>\n

What would you say to another person who is considering applying next\u00a0year?<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Go for it! I really enjoy the internship. It provides an opportunity to gain a variety of experiences, develop new skills and gain a better understanding of the conservation and marine sector. If you’re like me and don’t have much work experience, it’s a fantastic way to get started. Being able to use Welsh at work is also very important.”<\/p>\n

What do you hope will be the next step for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

“I’m not quite sure yet, but I want to continue to have a variety of experiences and take the next step in the field.
