Smart Gwynedd a Môn

Bringing smart towns to Gwynedd and Anglesey.

Overview

Smart Gwynedd a Môn is a Gwynedd and Anglesey County council funded project delivered by Menter Môn, which supports high street regeneration by introducing new technology and encouraging data driven decision making.

Our partners are currently installing community WiFi on high streets across Gwynedd and Anglesey and these access points collect anonymous data which is displayed on the project’s open-source data platform, Patrwm.io.

This data includes footfall figures by the day and hour, along with dwell time of anyone who is in the network area for more than 5 minutes. Demographic data is also collected on those who log in to the WiFi system and take a short survey. All this information is then turned into easy to understand graphs, available for anyone to download.

The data can be used to inform businesses decisions and to measure the effect of any interventions or events in the town, and to compare trends across towns.

Alongside the community WiFi, our partners are installing Lorawan networks with internet of things sensors to monitor air quality, humidity, and temperature across our Smart Towns. Sensors can be deployed across towns to measure anything from bin use to parking bays.

Another aim of the project is to explore and encourage the use of other innovative technologies such as digital hubs and signage and various digital platforms to help solve high street issues

To date, our smart towns include Aberdaron, Bala, Beddgelert, Bethesda, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Llan Ffestiniog, Llanberis, Llangefni, Penygroes, Porthmadog and Pwllheli.

The next towns to be added to the network will be:

Abersoch, Amlwch, Bangor, Barmouth, Beaumaris,  Benllech,  Criccieth, Dolgellau, Harlech, Holyhead, Menai Bridge, Nefyn, Penrhyndeudraeth, Rhosneigr and Tywyn.

Once a town is added to our network, we host an introductory workshop to present the technologies that are available and to understand a town’s ‘pain points’ and their priorities going forward. We then present the town with an action plan and arrange regular follow ups to ensure that towns take ownership of their smart agenda.

An action plan includes short, mid and long term goals, and can focus on businesses’ specific needs such as digital upskilling to town-wide issues like traffic management.

If you are a business owner, regeneration/ community group, or anyone who wants to make a difference in their town, get in touch and sign up to one of our workshops.

We would also love to hear from students, tech heads, data lovers… anyone who would like to be their town’s ‘digital champion’
