We are calling on Ynys Môn residents to share local traditions that deserve to be recognised on the UK’s living heritage list. This is part of the UK’s commitment to UNESCO’s 2003 Living Cultural Heritage Plan.

Living heritage refers to the customs, skills, crafts, celebrations and rituals that are passed down from generation to generation. These are not just things in a museum, but practices that are still alive and continue to develop within our communities.

Background

In 2024, the United Kingdom joined other countries in supporting this Convention, and we are proud to be part of contributing to the official lists of living heritage across the country.

Which Anglesey traditions would you like us to include?

Anglesey has a wealth of unique and inspiring traditions, and we are keen to ensure that they get the recognition they deserve. Here are some examples:

  • Egg Clapping – a playful and unique tradition for our schools and families.
  • Menai Bridge Fair- one of our best known fairs and one that holds special memories and relevance for local residents.
  • Shortbread, also known as Teisen Berffro which translates as Aberffraw Cake – part of our culinary heritage that reflects the traditional flavors of the island.
  • Saint Dwynwen celebrations – a celebration that recognises Saint Dwynwen, the patron saint of Welsh lovers, with a deep connection to our landscape and our history.

Some are also involved with Menter Môn schemes and activities over the years for example seeing red squirrels, coastal paths, Aberlleiniog Castle, Gwyl Cefni.

We want to hear from you

You, the residents of Anglesey are the best people to decide which traditions are really important, alive and worth passing on.

This could include old sea customs, local crafts, agricultural skills, traditional games, performances, or even rituals that are kept alive in small communities throughout the island.

If you have an idea, example, or tradition you’d like us to nominate for the list, we’d love to hear from you.
