Throughout September, Menter Môn’s Cylchol project is running a campaign to encourage people in Gwynedd and Ynys Môn (Anglesey) to make small practical changes that will boost the circular economy. From repairing furniture, jewellery or clothes, to creating an ottoman out of recycled bottles the aim is to encourage people to re-use and recycle.
During the month, 70+ events will be held across both counties, giving children and people of all ages the opportunity to learn a new skill and make the most of what they have.
Cylchol also funds Ffiws maker spaces established across Gwynedd and Ynys Môn which offer regular activities to encourage repair and reuse, rather than buying new.
According to Elen Parry, Cylchol Project Manager: “Throughout September, we will be holding various events to show how people and businesses in our communities can reduce waste, mend what they already have and make the most of local resources.
“The campaign is running in conjunction with Second Hand September, Recycle Week and Sustainable Fashion Week – all of which fit in with our ethos and the aims of the Cylchol scheme.
“From patchwork courses and a slow fashion event to beach cleaning and skateboard making workshops – there is something for everyone over the next few weeks.”
One of the Ffiws spaces that will host events during September is the one in GISDA Caernarfon. According to Lynwen Hughes, GISDA’s Ffiws Space co-ordinator, “We are very proud of our maker space, which enables us to hold creative workshops throughout the year for GISDA’s young people and the wider community.
“And during September, we are offering a number of workshops including sewing a tote bag out of second-hand materials and recycling food cans to create a pencil holder.
“We will also have a series of workshops over four weeks, starting with screen printing on second-hand clothes, and then enhancing the design with hand stitching such as embroidery and sashiko.
“The finished items will be shown at a Cylchol slow fashion event, organised by Llai, at Galeri Caernarfon on the 5th of October.”
