Menter Môn Morlais welcomed over 150 Year 11 students from Ynys Môn secondary schools for its first ever Green Horizons: Future Skills event at the substation near Holyhead this week. The aim was to inspire young people to explore career opportunities in renewable energy, low-carbon industries, and the wider green economy.

The half-day event will provided hands-on experiences, interactive displays, and the chance to speak with local businesses about jobs and sustainable careers. It also gave employers the opportunity to showcase their commitment to environmental responsibility and the development of future talent.

Gruff Parry, a Year 12 student from Ysgol Gyfun Llangefni who helped shape the event during his work placement with Morlais this year, said: “My work experience was fantastic. It really gave me a clear idea of the tidal energy sector and the different types of careers available here on Ynys Môn. I hope today gets other students just as excited about green careers as me.”

Fiona Parry, Project Officer: Skills and Training at Menter Môn Morlais, highlighted the importance of preparing the next generation for a low-carbon future:
“Events like Green Horizons are vital because they show young people that sustainable careers are not just possible here in north Wales but they’re also exciting. We want students to leave here inspired and informed about the opportunities ahead and to want to think about a career with the likes of Morlais on Ynys Môn.

“Securing local benefit through Morlais, including jobs and training development has been important driver for this project since it began. This event highlights that we remain as committed as ever to that vision.”

Throughout the day, students had the chance to engage with industry experts, explore interactive displays, and learn about the different careers in low-carbon industries. By connecting young people with local businesses, Fiona and the team at Morlais want to spark interest in sustainable careers and highlight the growing opportunities within the green economy locally.

Green Horizons partners and sponsors included The North Wales Regional Skills Partnership, Careers Wales, Crown Estate, and Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK.

Nikki Lawrence, chief executive at Careers Wales, who attended the event, said: “We were delighted to support Morlais with this initiative. It’s so important for young people to be given the chance to explore the growing opportunities in sustainability and green skills.

“Careers events like this connect pupils with employers in their area, expand their horizons and raise their awareness of opportunities available to them.”

This event was part funded by UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and supported by the Isle of Anglesey County Council.
