Holyhead Hydrogen Hub
Powering a Cleaner, Greener Future
North Wales is becoming an important part of the UK’s clean energy future – driving innovation, creating green jobs, and contributing to the transition to a net-zero economy. The Holyhead Hydrogen Hub is playing a key role in this shift, as a landmark project which will produce and distribute green hydrogen for transport, industry, and Non-Road Mobile Machinery (NRMM).
Using renewable electricity from its sister project, the Morlais tidal energy scheme, the Hub will be a major step toward reducing emissions in sectors that are harder to decarbonise. Based at Parc Cybi in Holyhead, it will form part of a wider strategy to position the region as a centre of hydrogen innovation and low-carbon growth.
We’re aiming to deliver the Holyhead Hydrogen Hub as part of our growing energy portfolio, driven by a vision to create local jobs, boost the region’s economy, and ensure that the transition to clean energy delivers long-term benefit for our communities.
Collaboration and Partnership
Menter Môn is leading the development of the Holyhead Hydrogen Hub, working alongside our partner Hynamics, a subsidiary of EDF. By combining our local knowledge and their technical expertise, our aim is to create a hydrogen hub that will promote the transition to a cleaner, greener economy.
Why Hydrogen Matters Now?
Hydrogen is a clean, zero-emission alternative to fossil fuels. As we aim for a low-carbon future, hydrogen offers a viable solution to decarbonise sectors where electrification alone isn’t enough or practical.
Hydrogen can…
- Support decarbonisation in transport and heavy industries
- Provide a local, reliable, and renewable fuel source
- Build resilience in our energy systems
- Promote innovation and first-mover opportunities for North Wales
How is Menter Môn getting involved?
Like all our energy projects and initiatives, we want to ensure local benefit through clean energy.
The Holyhead Hydrogen Hub is more than a local renewable energy project, it is part of our mission to deliver local economic growth, create jobs, and open up new career paths in green industries.
We’re proud to be promoting:
- New employment opportunities in Holyhead and Ynys Môn
- Clean energy skills development and training
- Local supply chain growth for hydrogen technologies
- A strong foundation for future hydrogen innovation across Wales
Helping You Make the Transition to Zero-Emission Fuel
We want to work with business and organisations looking for low carbon transport solutions. By working with our partners from across Wales and further afield we can support you to make the transition.
We can support you to:
- Understand how hydrogen fits into your decarbonisation strategy
- Connect with suppliers, funders, and partners
- Access funding for hydrogen transition
Next Steps for the Holyhead Hydrogen Hub
The Hub already has planning consent for a 1MW electrolyser, with plans to scale to 5MW or 10MW. Pre-development work is underway, including industry and off-taker engagement.
We are currently seeking expressions of interest from:
- Public sector fleets
- Logistics and haulage companies
- NRMM users and manufacturers
- Infrastructure and civil engineering firms
- Hydrogen technology innovators
Do you want to be part of the story?
This is your chance to be part of something transformative. Whether you want to use hydrogen, invest in infrastructure, or support sustainable growth in Wales – we want to hear from you.
FAQs
Why is this important for Wales?
The Hub supports Wales’s transition to net-zero by creating green jobs, reducing pollution, and supporting cleaner transport and industry. It helps position Wales as a leader in renewable hydrogen innovation.
How will it help reduce emissions?
By replacing fossil fuels in harder to electrify sectors such as heavy transport, logistics, and industry. As a zero-emission fuel hydrogen can cut carbon significantly. Electrification is effective for many uses, but hydrogen is more suitable for heavy and long-distance transport and industry.
What is hydrogen fuel and how is it produced?
Hydrogen fuel is a clean energy source that can power vehicles and industrial processes. At Holyhead, it will be made using a process called electrolysis, powered by renewable electricity.
Will it create jobs for local people?
Yes. The project is expected to create high-quality green jobs and provide training opportunities to develop clean energy skills, benefiting the economy of Ynys Môn and the wider north Wales region.
Is the project already underway?
Yes. Planning permission has already been secured for a 1MW electrolyser, and pre-development activities have started, including partnerships with local and national stakeholders.
Is hydrogen safe and what are the risks?
Hydrogen is a flammable gas, so like petrol or natural gas, it must be handled with care. However, it has been safely used in industry for decades. The Holyhead Hydrogen Hub is designed to operate safely and will follow all the latest standards from the HSE.
Key facts about hydrogen safety:
- Hydrogen is non-toxic and dissipates quickly into the air if released.
- It’s colourless and odourless, but sensors detect leaks quickly.
- The project is regulated and inspected under UK safety and environmental laws.
What is the initial production capacity of the Hub?
The Hub has secured planning consent for a 1MW electrolyser, with plans to scale to 5MW or 10MW based on confirmed demand and partnerships.
What sectors can benefit from this hydrogen supply?
Target sectors include:
- Public sector fleets
- Logistics and heavy haulage
- Civil engineering and construction
- Non-Road Mobile Machinery (NRMM)
- Hydrogen tech manufacturers and innovators
Why choose hydrogen over electrification?
While electrification is effective for many uses, hydrogen is more suitable for:
- Heavy and long-distance transport
- Industry with high energy needs
- Operations where battery systems are impractical
Will the hydrogen produced be fully renewable?
Yes. The Holyhead Hydrogen Hub uses renewable tidal energy from the nearby Morlais scheme to power electrolysis, ensuring zero-emission green hydrogen production.
How can industry partners get involved?
We are seeking expressions of interest from:
- Hydrogen off-takers
- Infrastructure and technology suppliers
- Fleet operators and logistics firms
- Local and national collaborators in the hydrogen value chain
What are the key benefits for industry partners?
- Access to a local, renewable hydrogen supply
- Opportunities for collaboration and innovation
- Participation in a high-profile clean energy project
- Contribution to emissions reduction and ESG goals
Where can I meet the team or learn more?
Join us at:
- Hydrogen Cymru 2025 (3 July, Mercure Holland House, Cardiff)
- Hydrogen Expo & Demo Day (17 July, Bay Studios, Swansea)
Or contact us directly to arrange a meeting.
