Following today’s confirmation that Wylfa will be home to the UK’s first Small Modular Reactor (SMR) nuclear power station, we are keen to confirm our commitment to helping local businesses and communities to benefit from the opportunities that this notable investment will bring to Anglesey, North West Wales and beyond.

We are a company that works to promote innovation within the energy sector through our tidal energy scheme, Morlais and the Holyhead Hydrogen Hub so the connection is obvious. These projects, together with the development of Wylfa, create significant economic opportunities for local businesses and strengthen the portfolio of the economy on Anglesey including the supply chain, food businesses, our wider business projects and more.

Here are a few ways we can offer support as a result of this announcement:

Business Support: Through our schemes such as Hwb Menter and Business Wales we can provide advice, mentoring and funding guidance to support local businesses to prepare for opportunities in the supply chain linked to Wylfa and other major projects.

Skills and Innovation: Our programs focus on upskilling the workforce and fostering innovation in sectors such as renewable energy, digital technology, and food production — ensuring that Anglesey and beyond businesses are ready to meet future demands. We will also highlight opportunities for young people, including those who have left to find work.

Developing Communities where the Welsh language flourishes: We continue to promote vibrant communities where the Welsh language flourishes, high quality jobs are accessible, and local identity is celebrated. Our projects – from cultural initiatives to environmental conservation – are designed to provide lasting benefits to residents.

Menter Môn food projects, such as Larder Cymru, can help local producers take advantage of new opportunities in the supply chain created by the development of Wylfa, ensuring that businesses on Anglesey and beyond benefit from increasing demand for quality Welsh produce,

Dafydd Gruffydd, Managing Director of Menter Môn, said:

“This announcement is a turning point for Anglesey. Our priority will be to ensure that local businesses and communities are at the heart of this transformation. We will work with partners to maximize economic benefits, create opportunities for young people, and protect our culture and environment”.

Today’s announcement shows how Anglesey can be at the forefront of moving towards net zero. This can be an opportunity to revive the local economy and strengthen community resilience.
